Handling resistance to new policies from long-tenured employees

We're implementing new controls that change how long-standing processes work. Experienced employees are pushing back saying "we've always done it this way." How do you overcome this resistance?

This is about acknowledging expertise while explaining new requirements. Approaches that work: 1) Acknowledge their experience is valuable - "Your knowledge helps us implement this well," 2) Explain the regulatory/risk driver - external pressure is harder to argue with, 3) Involve them as SMEs in developing the HOW, even if the WHAT is non-negotiable, 4) Address underlying concerns (is it about workload, capability, fear of change?), 5) Provide extra support during transition, 6) Document the gap between current state and requirement clearly. Sometimes a conversation about consequences of non-compliance (regulatory action, personal liability) helps, but use this carefully.
